We are coffee lovers, living in Pasadena. Everyday is a new day to go enjoy a coffee that will make our life better. We try, try and try again, love or don't, discover, forget and loose places,  and we have decided to share our coffee world. This is our manifesto, a running document outlining our local shops,  observed from our personal and subjective angle. We would like to talk about what a good coffee shop needs to be,  to appear in this blog: The space's atmosphere, ambience,  the community,   t he convenience and  practicality,  such as location, parking and transit access,  the staff, the hours, the prices,  the environmental awareness,  food when needed to be mentioned,  and of course,  the quality of coffee.

Unincorporated

Image
3045 Lincoln Ave Altadena, CA  91001   Unincorporated Coffee Roasters happens to be close to us,  with three different locations. —on Lincoln in Altadena, across from Colorado and Eagle Rock Blvd in Eagle Rock  an  in Tujunga  They open as early as early bird hours, which is a plus for sunrise lovers.  They’re open from 6 am to 4 pm every day You can also find their coffee in other places since they roast and sell wholesale. The Altadena location has an okay-sized room with about 10 seats,  two outdoor tables for four, and a back patio that makes a difference,  accommodating about 20 more people. The espresso is dark, rich, and tasty —somehow comparable to Jones. It also comes with sparkling water —thank you.  They offer nice pastries, burritos, and sandwiches as well. The price of a drip coffee is steep; not sure why.  Parking is acceptable on Lincoln,  with a few spots in the strip mall next door where they roast, called ...

Tepito

Image
695 E Colorado Blvd Pasadena, CA  91101 open 8am to 6pm everyday Across from the playhouse on Colorado,  by the entrance of Vromans, Tepito has a mission,  Working hand in hand to uplift community. From Farm to Cup. The coffee is grown and roasted in Mexico,  the pastries are from homeboy industries in Chinatown. They also serve burritos We like the location, really good, movie theater and book store, target or wine store, the play house etc. That s a spot for sure. The inside can accommodate about 12 people, the porch about 8 and the terrace 10. The decoration is genuinely Mexican, the colors, the details up to the alter in the corner. We ordered 2 espressos, scared by the steep price of the regular drip, $5.95/6.95 Americano, and other signature drinks. The drinking experience is decent on the fruity citrus acidic side without being agressive. Not sure if we'll come back-  except if we have some business around and prefer to stop nearby instead of Urth cafe...

Intelligentsia

Image
55 East Colorado Blvd Pasadena, CA 91105 Open from 7am to 6pm Monday to Thursday, 7am to 7pm Friday to Sunday.   We showed up at opening time, waited few minutes before the door was unlocked. The place smells a little dirty,   and that’s maybe at the early time only 2 employees are in charge.   Well, they did not have enough time to clean the room and the tables,   as some crumbs were where we seated from the day before.   The room looks nice though, about 50 people can fit,   the location cool too   Right on the main strip of Colorado. Not sure why they don’t have tables outside, maybe seasonal thing!?   The nice girl at the counter was very sweet,   she warned me that the espresso was a little sour,  due to the early time as they calibrate along the day,  she offered to change it if I was not pleased. I did not need to, even though I felt it a touch sour that was very decent,  better than many other places. Amanda took an Am...

Rosebud

Image
2302 E Colorado Blvd Pasadena, CA 91107 Open everyday from 7am to 3 pm Rosebud Coffee & Coffee With A Cause is a nice place They serve light and medium roast coffee that they roast in house  and are   a social enterprise that operates as a craft coffee shop  while providing a 15-month paid internship and job skills training program for transitional-aged youth. We wondered if they maybe should have stronger management,  as the four guys behind the counter appeared to be slow and not very focused on their tasks.  Well, that’s another subject, and the coffee is surely pleasant. The espresso, on the fruity side, served with a glass of sparkling water, is always welcome. We had a little bit of a shock looking at the prices of the pastries, provided by Sugarbloom. Understanding the philosophy behind the program  — taking kids off the street and helping them — is something;  feeling screwed over for a croissant at $7.25 is another story. Beautiful, though...

The boy and the bear

Image
951 E Green St Pasadena, CA   91106 At the corner of Mentor and Green Street, The Boy and the Bear is making a statement.   Open from 7 am to 4 pm the building has very large windows covered by curtains,  hiding the inside. Stepping in, you enter an exotic jungle atmosphere filled with plants  that can be hard to notice since the light is dimmed by a combination of grey and black paint.  A peculiar music amplifies the mood.  The Boy and the Bear wants to be different, but true to its roots. Inside, there are a few slingback chairs contrasted with benches made of simple planks,  uncomfortable, accommodating about 20 people.  A few small tables outside seat about 10 people on the sidewalk. Parking is okay all along Green Street, which can be a bit crowded but beautiful. The coffee is respectable, soft, and well-balanced (with darker notes),  farmed in Colombia and roasted locally in Redondo Beach.  Pastries are quality offerings from Out o...

Blue Bottle

Image
Located in Old Town Pasadena , on the corner of Fair Oaks and Mercantile Place,  in a beautiful alley, Blue Bottle Coffee opens at 6 a.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. on weekends, closing at 6 p.m. Parking very convenient, structures with cheap fees or street. They offer a terrace to make up for the tiny interior,  which accommodates only a handful of people — about 10.  The coffee, though, is very reputable, and for good reason. Blue Bottle has many locations across the U.S. and overseas,  and maintaining that level of quality within their business model is remarkable.  They offer two espresso choices, including a rotating single-origin option each season,  served with a glass of sparkling water.  The Americano is gorgeous. It feels more like a craftsman’s shop than a global brand. So far, the staff has been nice, and the décor is simple, neutral, and clean.   The pastries look really good,  the website says Sugarbloom, the Baristas, said ...
